Hardcover has olive green paper-covered boards with gilt spine and cover lettering. Front cover has ornate oval gilt embossed panel with image of a bridge and city skyline. Corners and spine ends bumped and rounded. Head of spine frayed. Corners rubbed. Small nick at rear edge of spine. Small scratch on front cover. Top edges gilt. Black & white frontispiece with tissue guard. Many black and white plates which are tipped in. Binding lightly cracked in two places near center. Hinges NOT cracked. Deckle edges. Pages clean and unmarked. Four pages (one folded leaf) with an attached illustration are detached. This does not appear to be damage, rather it looks as though they missed being sewn into the binding signature (a binding flaw). Preface by Paul W. Bartlett. 454 pages. No dust jacket. Carefully packed, shipped in a box.
