An excellent three volume set of John Brown's essays and papers, which delve into his various specialisms of philosophy, art, medical history and his own personal career. All in full signed crushed morocco binding by Suttaby. Complete in three volumes. First series (Locke and Sydenham) new edition. Second series (Rab and His Friends) eleventh edition. Third series (John Leech and Other Parts) fourth edition. Monochrome frontispiece of the author to first series.These works by Scottish physician and essayist John Brown, contain stories, essays and papers on art, medical history and biography. The first series is almost exclusively devoted to medical subjects, deriving from his apprenticeship with James Syme, and his acquiring of a large medical practice in Edinburgh. The second series contains one of the best-known of these include 'Rab and his Friends', a short story that became very popular in the 19th century, offering subtle insight into the how John Brown's teacher and employer, Doctor James Syme, taught and operated.The third series, as the title would suggest, focuses largely on caricaturist and illustrator John Leech, who is best known for his work for the political-satire magazine 'Punch', as well as Brown's thoughts of other creatives he had been fond of. All in full blue crushed morocco binding signed by Suttaby. Externally, in excellent condition with minor rubbing and bumping to the extremities. All spines faded slightly, causing difference in colour to the boards. The odd markings to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Offsetting to differing degrees to endpapers, heaviest to the front of the first series. Contemporary ink inscription to first series front free endpaper. Very Good Indeed
