London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1897. Second edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover in olive green cloth lettered in gilt and with gilt line drawing portrait of Liza by Henry Bishop. "Second Edition" inprint on title page and no brackets around "All rights reserved" on verso of title page. 242 pp. plus 6 pp. "Preliminary List of Mr. T. Fisher Unwin's Announcements for 1897". About very good, slightly cocked, soem soiling and a narrow strip of fade to the spine. Maugham's first book, written while he was a medical student at St. Thomas' Hospital in the Lambeth section of London. The protagonist is Liza Kemp, an 18-year old factory worker who lives with her alcoholic mother in Lambeth. A popular girl in the neighborhood, she nonetheless feels increasingly isolated; she and a married man begin seeing each other on the sly; the man rapes and punches her (domestic violence is a continuing theme the of the book) but she continues to be in love with him. She becomes pregnant but suffers a miscarriage and dies as a result.
