About This Item
London: T. Fisher Unwin,, 1897. In this world nothing really very much matters First edition, a remarkably fresh copy of the author's debut novel. Set in the slums of Lambeth and based on Maugham's experience as a medical student at St Thomas's Hospital, the novel is a vivid portrayal of working-class London life. In a paper addressed to the publisher, Maugham described Liza as "the story of a nine days wonder in a Lambeth slum. It shows that those queer folk the poor live and love and love and die in very much the same way as their neighbours of Brixton and Belgravia, and that hatred, malice, and all uncharitableness are not the peculiar attributes of the Glorious British Middle Class, and finally it shows that in this world nothing really very much matters, and that in Vere Street, Lambeth, nothing matters at all" (Stott, p. 17). Octavo. Original green cloth, lettering and decorations to spine and front cover in gilt, to rear cover in black. Pencil ownership inscription to dedication leaf, Sheffield bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Gentle lean to spine, a touch of foxing to edges and endpapers, superficial split to rear inner hinge, cloth bright with sporadic faint marks and minor peripheral rubbing, contents a little shaken, small mark to margin of a couple of leaves, otherwise clean: a very good copy. Stott A1.
