Description:
Chicago, Illinois:: Theodora Press,, 1991.. Edition of 10. 7.5 x 13.25"; 28 pages. Accordion fold. 15 hand-colored etchings. Letterpress titling, ornaments, and colophon. Printed on Rives lightweight. Bound in a top-fold accordion with gatefold opening. Signed and numbered by the artist. Teresa Pankratz: "'Pas de Deux' is a visual narrative depicting a couple's frustrated attempt at intimacy. Bound by self-imposed constrictions, they reach out - but never quite touch. "This tale was inspired by a performance piece entitled 'Nothing Up Your Sleeve' performed by Nan Shineflug and Jeff Abell of the Chicago Moving Company (one of the first modern dance troupes in the Midwest)." The French pun - pas de deux as dance duet for two, and pas meaning not - underscores the point. The beauty of the etchings and the delicacy of the construction turn what might have been a vaudeville skit into a poignant story.

Description:
Lorraine Hansberry's tour de force was the first Broadway play produced to be written by a Black woman. A Raisin in the Sun explores the dynamics of a Black family in America as they confront prejudice and the profound barriers due to racism in all aspects of their daily lives. Before its debut, Hansberry worked as a Black civil rights activist and journalist for Black papers, and is now known to have been a closeted lesbian, leading to intense isolation even after she was catapulted into fame.
The play debuted at The Ethel Barrymore Theatre in 1958 and the book was published the following year, it includes photographs of the original production, and therefore documents a crucial moment in the history of performance arts.

Description:
1699 1ed Jeremey Collier Defense of Short View of English Theater Puritan Plays

Jeremy Collier was a 17th-century English theater critic who, in 1698, wrote a highly controversial attack on English comedies. 'Short View of the Immorality and Profaneness of the English Stage' was filled with Collier's views on what he considered to be profanity and immorality in English plays. He believed plays should be providing moral encouragement, rather than encouraging unethical vices.

Immediately after Collier's 'Short View' was released, playwrights quickly responded with their own attacks on Collier's views. Naturally, Collier published his own defense of his 'Short View' which focused heavily on the content William Congreve's plays.

This 1699 first edition of 'Defense' is a fine printing of the literary war between Puritan restrictions and English dramatists!

Description:
1774 William Shakespeare PLAYS Illustrated Theatre Julius Caesar Winters Tale 3v

"The remarkable thing about Shakespeare is that he is really very good - in spite of all the people who say he is very good."
– Robert Graves

A rare set of the plays of William Shakespeare. This three-volume lot includes some of the most famous works of Shakespearean theatre, including A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, and Julius Caesar. The plays in this collection are 'acting versions' of the staged plays, and according to Ritchie and Sabor,
"this edition offers a valuable record of the ways in which the plays were being altered at the time, with an introductory advertisement justifying this practice." (Ritchie & Sabor, p.397)
John Bell, the publisher of this landmark set, provided a "read-along guide to contemporary theatrical display with direct references to the performance of Shakespeare on the contemporary stage, it had commercial appeal." (R&S, p.232).

This beautiful, charming set includes 26… Read More
