About This Item

Cambridge, England: Verso, 2010. First Edition. Fourth Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Cambridge, England: Verso, 2010. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/Fourth Printing. 416 pages. Book-length account on subject. One of Slavoj Zizek's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited print run by a small independent press, Verso Books, as a hardcover original only that went into multiple subsequent printings. There is NO American Edition. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Slavoj Zizek's "Living In The End Times". The philosopher as prolific and indefatigable agent provocateur: Bristling, as usual, with brilliant ideas and counter-intuitive observations. You do NOT have to agree with any of Zizek's conclusions at all; that is not the important role he has uniquely played in contemporary discourse. Which is to open up and stimulate the public sphere with provocative insights that undermine the status quo, that is to say, cliche and received wisdom. Served up with fervor in accessible prose. "Shows the cultural and political forms of the stages of ideological avoidance and political protest, from New Age obscurantism to violent religious fundamentalism" (Publisher's blurb). "Everything one expects from him, a heady mix of psychoanalysis, politics, theology, philosophy, and cultural studies. Will leave the reader exhilarated" (Marcus Pound). Zizek is a radical thinker steeped in the great Continental tradition (of Freud and Lacan), who is formally trained in philosophy and psychoanalysis, but is neither an academic philosopher nor a practicing psychoanalyst. "I always have a certain admiration for people who are aware that somebody has to do the job. What I hate about these pseudo-left, beautiful-soul academics is that they are fully aware that somebody else will do the job for them" (Slavoj Zizek). An absolute "must-have" title for Slavoj Zizek collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in blue ink-pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "To Elias, Slavoj Zizek". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, who is named, obtained the signature in person. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/Fourth Printing available online and despite its imperfection (one closed tear on the DJ, but it's there) is still fine condition overall: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Slavoj Zizek rarely does public signings, making every signed copy of his books rare and collectible. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant philosopher-thinkers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SLAVOJ ZIZEK TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 184467598X.
