London: Printed for Mathews and Leigh, Strand, by Harrison & Leigh 1812. (hardcover) xiii, [1], 430pp. Near fine. 8vo. In half polished calf over marbled paper boards. Spine ruled in gilt, compartments with decorative devices in gilt; title compartment in black leather, lettering in gilt; author compartment in deep-brown leather, lettering in gilt. Binding remarkably bright and unworn; with the light rubbing to marbled boards and at corners. Else bright and tight. Later re-bind (presumably early Victorian). Internally clean, with only faint foxing to initial and final few leaves; occasional single spot of foxing in margin. Else remarkably bright, tight, and clean. An exceedingly handsome copy of this well-known tome of English history. In the preface, Aikin writes that "on tracing backwards the history of English erudition, I soon came to two names which seemed to form an era
whose celebrity was not confined to mere authorship; but who acted important parts in the church and state at a period of extraordinary interest in English history"..
