First edition, PRESENTATION COPY inscribed on the front free endpaper "Genl Howard with warmest regards of the Author. New York, May 10 / 66". The recipient known as "the Christian General," Oliver Otis Howard, is a unique figure in Civil War history. His reputation as an efficient and personally courageous officer led to his eventually serving as superintendent of West Point and he founded Howard University in 1867. The author (1812-1897) was missionary to the American Female Guardian Society and Home for the Friendless. This work supplements his 1859 "Lost and Found, or Life Among the Poor" with 12 editions published into the twentieth century.
