White & Co.Ltd.,London,1896,and illustrated by Fred Barnard.This later edn by different publisher and illustrator.] VG.Neat,ink handwritten owner name to front pastedown with another handwritten,ink,gift presentation inscrptn+date (31/8/23) to same owner,to the ffe.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original brown cloth boards with blind-tooled art-noveau-esque geometric design and embossed lettering within oblong panels to front board/cover with publisher's heraldic device towards centre of board/cover,lightly sunned spine/ backstrip with bright,crisp,stamped gilt title,author+publisher lettering slightly oxidised but still visible,rear board/cover plain and undecorated,and clean plain white pastedown - owner inscrptn excepted with both verso+recto of both front+rear free endpapers with off-set foxing.from respective opposing pastedowns,both hinges solid and sound and without any cracking.Top edges lightly dust-soiled/tone with faint,sporadic foxing/ spotting,fore-edges similar but slightly cleaner and brighter and more sporadically foxed/spotted; contents bright,tight and clean with page-edge foxing - commensurate with book's age - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread,apart from my own collation.UK,12mo HB,no dw/dj,1st edn thus,vii-ixpp+2-294pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,XXVI (26) chapters,plus [unpaginated] foxed half-title page with publisher's advert to its recto,colour illustrated frntis by Albert Morrow,,foxed verso+recto title page,and similarly foxed dedication page.
A highly collected and prolific children's books author in her typical style and format and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon. L. T. Meade [1844-1914] was the pseudonym of Elizabeth Thomasina Meade Smith,a prolific writer of girls' stories and not generally known,crime and sci-fi. novels too.Writing from the age of 17,in her lifetime,she produced over 300 books,being so prolific that no fewer than eleven new titles under her byline appeared in the first few years after her death.
Albert George Morrow [1863-1927.] Worked as Albert Morrow,Born in Comber, County Down,eldest brother of George Morrow.Studied art at South Kensington School of Art.On the staff of The English Illustrated Magazine from 1884.He was a contributor to Punch,to numerous boys' magazines and to children's annuals and picture books.He drew in a sketchy,linear style,and was also a watercolour painter and poster designer.Other magazines,periodicals he contributed to include The Big Budget,The Boys' Friend,Cassell's Magazine, Chums,Little Folks and Mrs Strang's Anual amongst some.
