About This Item

New York: Wm H. Wise & Co., 1916. Volume II of the 14-volume series. Although the copyright date on the reverse of the title page is 1916, this is The Anniversary Edition produced by the Roycrofters in East Aurora, NY, and dated 1922, per notice on last page. 308+ pages in very good condition (light edgewear, especially at top and bottom of spine; evidence of sticker removal on the first free endpaper; a bit of scuffing on the red-brown covers; the silk book mark is present but just laid in, no longer attached). Top edge gilt bright and clean. No dust jacket. Decorations and title page are clean, impressive examples of the craftsman style of the Roycrofters, as are the "initials"--beginniing letters--of sections. Photos available on request. Portraits present of each subject. Interesting to see who was included by Hubbard: Elizabeth Browning, Madame Guyon, Harriet Martineau, Charlotte Bronte, Christina Rossetti, Rosa Bonheur, Madame de Stael, Elizabeth Fry, Mary Lamb, Jane Austen, Empress Josephine, and Mary Shelley. Introduction by "Bert" Hubbard, Elbert Hubbard's son. The elder Hubbard is an entertaining writer, often surprising the reader with his wanderings in these biographical essays. When he writes of Mary Shelley, for example, he begins with Emerson. Now where did that come from? Ah, read the book and find out. Reddish brown covers, top edge gilt, embossed image of Hubbard on front cover (see our scan where it is faintly visible).. Hard Cover.
