About This Item

BEAUTIFUL COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS BY FERN BISEL PEAT FEATURING AN INGENIOUS
LITTLE BOY WHO OUTSMARTS THE TIGERS bringing home butter for those delicious pancakes.

This version of Bannerman's tale features a Southern black family- not portrayed with the usual racist dialect. Helen Bannerman's actual story is about an Indian family who where one would actually deal with tigers.
Fern Bisel Peat depicts her characters as colorful rag dolls.
The calico series was published right after the first edition. It is a thin, 8vo with colorful eps & illustrations. Patterned in calico-style paper over boards. This copy has very slight rub to 2 edge spots.

VG condition of an uncommon title.

The little boy has to give his colourful new clothes, shoes, and umbrella to four tigers so they will not eat him.

Reviews

On Jan 14 2015, a reader said:
When I was a young I thought this was a great book. I never considered this book racist. But back then I didn't know what racism was. Sambo could have pink with yellow polka dots I would never have known the difference. Only when the grown ups made it racist did this ever enter my mind.
