About This Item

New York: The Dial Press. Very Good+ in Very Good- dj. (c.1964). Book Club Edition. Hardcover. [good sound book, modest shelfwear to bottom edges of covers, one-time owner's name written in upper corner of half-title page; jacket shows some wear at edges and extremities, with some wrinkling to the front panel, and has a short diagonal closed tear at the bottom corner of the rear panel]. (endpaper maps) Berger's Western burlesque, purporting to be "the reminiscences -- dictated at the ripe age of 111 -- of one Jack Crabb -- plainsman, Indian scout, gunfighter, buffalo hunter, bunco schemer and renegade squaw man. Cynical and unscrupulous, yet also a sentimental idealist, Jack Crabb alternates between life with the Cheyenne Indians, to whom he is a blood-brother, and the white company of such friends and enemies as Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane, and George Armstrong Custer." The 1970 film adaptation, directed by Arthur Penn, starred Dustin Hoffman as Crabb, which rather changed his character from "cynical and unscrupulous" to more of a Candide-like innocent, misadventuring his way through the American West. .
