About This Item
London: Jonathan Cape, 1954. 32 pages, including wrappers printed with drawings by Edwin Baker, bound with red silk cord (faded to brown and starting to unravel). contains 12 short descriptions of literary characters, including "The Earnest Reviewer", "The Unpublishable Novelist" and " The Publisher's Adviser". These little sketches are reprinted from Jonathan Cape's in-house journal, "Now & Then". Pencilled note inside front cover states 'written by Daniel George, publisher's advisor to Cape 1940s and '50s'. Loosely inserted is a sheet with the words 'written by Daniel George (reader),' but it is not known if this is the author's signature. Printed at the Alden Press on Spalding & Hodge mould-made paper and published privately by Cape for distribution to their "friends" for Christmas 1954. Covers are slightly rubbed and browned,. First Edition. Paperback. Good.
