Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1881. Life of the Enlightenment writer, in a handsome half-calf binding, brown with red & black leather labels. Parton was a popular biographer in his day, noted for his novelistic style; he also wrote lives of Franklin, Jefferson, Jackson, Greeley, & Burr. Volume 1 is the first edition of 1881, with the same date on title & copyright pages; volume 2 is a later printing, with 1882 on the title page. Both volumes show some wear & rubbing, scuffs here & there, corners bumped. Text clean; [2], 639; vi, 653 pages; index, bibliography, frontispiece portrait in each volume - one a quite formal portrait of Voltaire in his prime, the other a sketch of him in old age. . First Edition. Half Calf. Good. Octavo. Set.
