Patrick Gass is perhaps the fourth most famous member of the expedition, after Lewis, Clark and Sacajawea; his Journal, published in 1807, was the first detailed account of the Lewis and Clark expedition to appear in print, and his long life (he died in 1870 at age 99) added further to his fame.
