Boston, MA: Privately Printed, 1923. 1st. Three-quarter leather. Limited Edition to 2,000 copies. 4to. x, 114pp. Frontispiece photo-reproduction of Crocker with tissue guard; illustrations. Printed on Antique Biography Book Paper. Three-quarter blue leather and cloth with gilt lettering and ruling; top-edge gilt; marbled endpapers. Compliments card from Douglas Crocker laid in. A fine copy in fine blue cloth slipcase. The biography of an early railroad pioneer in the northeast; Crocker formed the Fitchburg Railroad in 1841, incorporated the existing Vermont & Massachusetts Railroad in 1844, and in 1848, secured a charter for the Troy & Greenfield Railroad, with provisions for a tunnel through Hoosac Mountain. He was termed "The Father of Modern Tunneling" for his influence in advancing the use of geologists, explosives, pneumatic tools, boring technology in tunnelling construction. Towards the end of his life, he was the U.S. Representative for Massachusetts.
