The first edition of this biography of Gregory the Seventh First Edition signed 'With the Author's Kind Regards' John William Bowden was an English writer on church matters. He was a close friend of John Henry Newman, who described their relationship in his Apologia. In the spring of 1840 he published his Life of Gregory the Seventh. This work had been first suggested to him by Newman In the original publisher's cloth bindings with paper spine labels. Externally, a trifle rubbed with light bumping to boards. Fading to spine and boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally clean and bright with some foxing to the endpapers. With an ink inscription 'With the authors kind regards' to the front blank of volume I. Good
