About This Item
St. Louis: Bryan, Brand & Co., Publishers, 1878. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/-1. st ed. Howes R-102. 477p, 6 plates (vibrant white) with tissue guards intact, multiple illustrations. Brown decorated cloth. The only defects are a little roll (paper separation to the end papers consistent with that), some edge wear to the spine (one small split). There are two POSs on the front end paper, with KKK neatly written on one corner. The front cover is lovely. This is the only published work on Harney, who was known for his involvement in several controversial battles and the mass execution of Irish soldiers from the Saint Patrick's Battalion of the Mexican army in 1847. Earlier, Harney himself escape death in St. Louis when he fled a mob intent on killing him because he had whipped a female slave to death. Harney was pro-slavery, offered a command by Lee, and relieved by Lincoln who later regretted that decision and spent years looking for another general (U.S. Grant) with a similar constitution. Very rare.
