Includes a sketch of Wm. English, his vice- presidential running mate. Two owner's names ffep, in pencil, no marks in book. Covers show considerable edge wear, corners worn through to boards, fraying to top and bottom of spine. A good reading copy.

Gilt lettered and decorated blue embossed, beveled edge boards. 8vo, 504pp. The book also contains a succinct biographical sketch of Wm. H. English, then a Democratic candidate for Vice President. Owner inscription on the inside of the front cover: "Benj F. Davis, Lancaster, Pa Aug. 23, 1880". This inscription date is the same as the book's Copyright date, indicating that this is a first edition. Light wear at the spine ends and corners, otherwise a very good copy.

[329]-375 contain a "Sketch of the Life and Public Career of William H. English, of Indiana," with portrait. Hancock graduated from West Point in 1844. He served in the Seminole War, the Mexican War, and various Western posts until 1861. Commissioned a brigadier-general in 1862, he distinguished himself at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg, he won fame as one of the Civil War's great soldiers by thwarting Lee's nearly successful attack on the Union flank. Following the war he commanded various army departments. A Democratic presidential candidate in 1880, he was defeated by James Garfield.

This is a nice collectible edition, published in 1880. The book is rough around the edges, and there is a very small line of separation between the spine and the front free end paper. The binding is still strong. The interior pages are tanned, but clean and unmarked. For its age, this book is still in good condition.
