About This Item
London: G & J Robinson, 1804. Hardcover. Good. Volume 1. Dimensions; 205 by 135mm. Pages; XI, (1), 320. Original paper covered boards. Lacking the paper on the spine. The front cover is held by the strings, rear cover slightly more secure. The text is complete, bright internally, some light toning and marking, intermittent light margin stain. The page edges are uncut. Sophia Lee 1750-1824, author of novels and dramas, who founded a school for girls. A scarce work, a 'novel' written in the form of epistles or letters, this was published in six volumes, and is said to contain much personal history of the author's own experiences, some of the writing was seen as quite vulgar at the time, a review at the time stated; 'a superior class of novel, both in point of language and of the interest in which it excites, but that, while it is rich in sentiments which all must approve, it contains some of a less correct nature, and cannot in all it's parts be submitted with prudence and safety to the innocence and inexperience of youth'. From the collection of the Earl of Meath (this would have been owned by the Countess of Meath).
