About This Item

London: Printed for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1821., 1821.. Very good. ILLUSTRATED WITH 36 HAND-COLORED AQUATINTS BY GEORGE & ROBERT CRUIKSHANK - Octavo, 9-1/4 inches high by 6 inches wide. Bound in contemporary tree calf by by Riviere, re-backed in later leather with the original gilt decorated spine with raised bands and the original red leather title label. The top edge is gilt. There is minor wear to the edges and corners of the original covers. The original spine, laid down onto new leather backing, is rubbed with small chips out of the head and a larger piece out of the tail. xvi & 376 pages, plus an 8-page publisher's catalog which is illustrated with woodcuts. Illustrated with 36 hand-colored aquatints, including an extra color pictorial title page, and with 3 folding leaves of music and several textual woodcuts. The bottom corner of the front endpaper is creased and chipped, a piece is out from the bottom corner of the front blank and from the bottom corner of the rear endpaper. There is occasional toning and soiling, as well as occasional minor stains, with offsetting to the pages opposite the plates. Very good.

First edition. Second issue with a footnote on page 9. According to Cohn 262 this is an early issue of the 3 folding leaves of music as the first leaf is unnumbered. Also according to Cohn it contains an early issue of the half-title as the printer's name is printed on the verso at the bottom left side of the page. Additionally, in the present copy "good-bies" on page 376 is not yet corrected.
