London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1859. Second edition (same year as the first). 8vo. 2 volumes in one: vi, (2), 343; (2), 336 pp. Separate title-page for volume two. Ten plates, primarily city views, tinted in fawn or blue. Roughly a third of the text, including two chapters that deal exclusively with slavery, and plates deal with Mackay's travels in the south. Howes M-118. Sabin 43355. Clark Old South III, 473: "Recorded some interesting descriptions of river boats, Southern swamps, a rice plantation, food, and tobacco chewing. His description of New Orleans is noteworthy ... [his] views on Southern life and slavery were favorable ... asserting that some slaveowners 'cohabited' with the more attractive young female slaves ... he overlooked the yeoman farmer in the South." Owner's name at head of title page, else very good. Original plum cloth (chipped at head of spine), gilt spine title. (9272).
