A family association copy with this volume being presented by Dodgson's sister. This work was written by Lewis Carroll's nephew, Stuart Dodgson Collingwood. He was invited by Carroll's surviving brothers and sisters to write the biography. This association copy has a gift inscription tipped in to the verso of the half-title dated 1898 signed by Dodgson's sister Elizabeth to one Reverend W Hooper dated 1898. Tipped in to the front endpaper is an unpublished autograph poem by the author addressed to 'LW' believed to be one of Carroll's 'child friends'. The poem is initialed S.D.C and regards a copy of this work, which was presented to LW in France according to the poem, 'across the sea a book I send, to tell you of a living friend'. One line states "He took the children by the hand and led them into Wonderland". Tipped in to the front pastedown is a newspaper article recounting unpublished letters from Dodgson to an 11 year old named Annie arranging his plans to photograph her. Loosely inserted is a letter to the Editor of the Times by Beatrice Hatch, one of Charles Dodgson's 'child-friends'. She notes 'May I, as one of his oldest "child-friends" try to give a picture of Mr Dodgson the companionable friend of little girls?' In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Spine is faded slightly. Light rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Tipped in to the front are newspaper clippings and a letter from the author to one 'LW'. To the verso of the half-title there is an inscription from Carroll's sister Elizabeth L Dodgson to Reverend W Hooper. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are bright. Occasional light spots to pages. Very Good
