About This Item

The Life of Katherine Mansfield, Alpers Antony. Published by Jonathan Cape, London, 1980. First Edition. 8vo up to 9½" tall., 466pp. with photo section, notes and index. Black over beige boards. Volume is in fine condition; unclipped jacket has top edge ruffling and otherwise fine.

Kathleen Mansfield Murry (1888–1923) was a prominent modernist writer who was born and brought up in New Zealand. She wrote short stories and poetry under the pen name Katherine Mansfield. With her contemporaries, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, she forms part of the literary avant-garde whose innovations in the second and third decades of the twentieth century signalled the emergence of modernism. Alpers' biography explores Mansfield's relationships with the Bloomsbury Group, D. H. Lawrence, her affair and marriage with John Middleton Murry, her desperate battles with tuberculosis, and her struggles as an artist.
