Color frontispiece, portrait of His Eminence from a portrait by Marie deFord Keller, 1920. 707 pages and 735 pages, index & sources. Gibbons was consecrated a bishop in 1868 and appointed cardinal in 1886. He wrote several works on Catholicism, contributed to journals and encyclopedias, and was an advocate for laborers' rights.
