About This Item
Boston: Ferdinand Andrews, 1840. Small Octavo. In two volumes, the abridge edition. Portrait frontispiece in volume one. 330 and 344pp. To accommodate a larger number of purchasers and readers, this abridgment was published. The commissions were mostly of a political or general nature. The biographical incidents and other parts, which constitute the narrative, have been preserved without change and nearly complete. From the library of Alice Maud Allen Atwater with her name and dated 1894. Alice was the youngest daughter of Thomas Allen, a former president of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and at the time of her wedding lived with her mother Ann in a lavish home in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Alice's husband-to-be, Charles Atwater, worked as a clerk and bookkeeper in Pittsfield. Their wedding was an extravagant affair, appropriate to Alice's family standing. Alice's daughter Alice Lorna bequeathed her wedding painting to the Everson Museum upon her death in 1975. The beautiful wedding portrait of Alice Maud Allen Atwater is currently on view in the exhibition. Bound in publisher's brown embossed cloth, spines gilt, some chipping to spine ends. occasional spots of foxing. A very good set.
