About This Item

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1856. First edition. Three quarter leather with pebbled cloth sides. Octavo. 356 pages. Near fine. 19th century binding of calf spine and fore corners with brown pebbled cloth sides, spine ornamented and ruled in black, red leather spine label titled in gilt. Rubs to extremities, a bit of chipping to title label on spine but no loss of text. Yellow endpapers a bit discolored, woodcut plates in text somewhat browned, else fine. A handsome copy of this important campaign biography.. Frontispiece engraved portrait, woodcut plates. Campaign biography of the first Republican Presidential nominee. Frémont had been born in Georgia, yet was opposed to slavery. He had led several expeditions to explore the West, and was a prominent figure in California at the time of his candidacy for President.

Significant parts of this biography, covering his first two expeditions to the West, are essentially autobiographical as they rely heavily on Frémont's official reports.

Frémont was defeated by James Buchanan in the 1856 Presidential election, but he paved the way for the first Republican to be elected in the next cycle--1860--in the person of one Abraham Lincoln of Illinois.

A truly interesting biography which also embodies a pivotal moment in American history.

Ref. MILES 374.
