New York: The New York Historical Society, 1940. Hardcover. Small 4to. Orange cloth with gilt lettering. xxii, 470pp. Largely uncut. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece, illustrations, marbled endpapers. Near fine. Dust jacket front panel survives, archivally mounted to matching brown stock to create complete jacket (Brodart encased), with diecut oval spine opening to reveal gilt spine title. Tight and attractive first edition (limited to 2000 copies printed on handmade rag paper) of this biography of the popular American stage and concert singer (1845-1931). Inner flyleaf bears a handsome presentation inscription and signature from Ina Love Thursby, the book's dedicatee: "For Gertrude Gale / Hoping she will cherish as / I do, these wonderful memories / of dear sister Emma -- / Ina Love Thursby / Feb. 21st 1941.
