Garden City: Doubleday, Doran and Company, 1928. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/fair. 8vo. xviii, [2] 268 pp. Bound in full black cloth, stamped in red and black on cover and spine, top edge stained red, in illustrated dust jacket. Black and white frontispiece and illustrations. Lawes was warden at Sing Sing from 1920 to 1941 and, throughout his career, was a vocal proponent of prison reform writing several books on the subject. Very Good+, minor age-toning to pages, internally clean, hinges tight, minor rubbing and wear to extremities of binding, the scarce dust jacket is in Fair condition with stamp in black ink to middle of spine, 1" piece missing at lower corner of front cover with 2" tear continuing upwards, 2" x 4" piece missing from head of spine around rear cover, several small chips and creasing to extremities, soiling and wear overall. Attractive, solid copy in scarce dust jacket.
