About This Item

The Bookplate Society, London, / Exlibristen, Frederikshavn, first edition, 1987. Limited edition of 650 copies. Plain wrappers, folio,. 27 , [1] pp,, ills in red and black. From the introduction:"Having .. had opportunity to examine all [Hagreen's] bookplates, it seemed worthwhile to make available as complete as possible a record of his ex-libris both to the bookplate fraternity and to students of the circle to which he belonged. The bookplates of his mentor and friend Eric Gill are fully documented and well-known. In Philip Hagreen we have an important member of Gill's cell of good living still happily with us sixty-four years after he joined the Ditchling community: the sole survivor of a group of artist-craftsmen who have left an indelible and impressive mark on British typography, the art of the book, stonecutting, sculpture, and so much else. Whilst the creation of ex-libris was only a small part of Hagreen's work, the illustrations in this study are in themselves evidence oi a unique and remarkable talent" . Elegant bookplate on front inside wrapper, Very Good in a dustwrapper which is browned at the top.
