Crimson Oasis goat skin, with onlays of various coiors, gilt and blind tooling, gilt edges, wrappers preserved, chemise and slipcase. Slipcase cracked along one edge.

Paris: A. Quantin, 1882. First edition. Stains in gutter of last few leaves, minor rubbing to backstrip, about fine. First edition. Royal octavo. 143p. Illustrated by Paul Avril with two chromolithograph plates, many text illustrations in color and black and white, with decorative borders and headpieces. Bound by F.J. Pfister in full pictorial morocco in the pyrography or "Poker Work" style, the upper cover depicting an open illustrated fan surrounded by angles, with an angelic fantasy on lower cover and columns on the turn-ins. Pyrographic designs are created with a heated platinum stylus. See Eloquent Witnesses by Mirjam M. Foot, p. 291. Frank J. Pfister is said to have introduced pyrography in book decoration.
