About This Item
London: Printed for the Benefit of A Charitable Institution at Bath and sold by J. Robson and W. Clarke, 1788. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo 7" - 7. This is a particularly and peculiarly lovely copy of the First and only edition ever publisher but of this influential and much cited work. Handsomely rebound (probably by the master printer Pat Bruno in 2000) but incorporating the original covers in the form of marbled paper and then newly rebacked, with the publication date (1788) stamped to spine. A short, squat octavo form. Five raised bands to spine, ornate fleurs-de-lis in the compartments made thereby. It is a complicated pagination: [ii], 192, [3], 4-100, and then with two folding maps, engraved, in splendid condition. The one at frontis is entitled "A Map of the Country in the city of Amsterdam." The second is titled "A Map of a Part of the United States," A very solid little tome, with some scuffing to tips, but not much, and the newly added gilt ruling is quite handsome. New endpapers added, and the paper is also quite bright and healthy. Thomas Bowdler (1754-1825) writes here about the Dutch-Prussia War. It was well received by both the reading public and the intelligentsia.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
