About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co., 1881. Edmund Burke (1729-1797) is oft called "the father of modern political conservatism." Born in Ireland by a Catholic mother and a Protestant father, he kept himself in both camps; noted for his support for Catholic emancipation and doubts about the American and French revolutions. At the time of this book, Matthew Arnold has abandoned poetry and assumed a critical stance toward "modern" culture. This is a Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copy of the First Edition. An uncommon book. Blue cloth binding, ruled; with titling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; xiii, 439 pages (last signature unopened]; with a two-page catalog in the rear. Tiny English bookseller label on the front paste-down. There is some light spotting, mainly to the endpapers and fore-edge. The spine has darkened, but the gilt remains bright and perfectly readable; the tips and the head and foot of the spine have very light rubbing. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
