About This Item
March 23, 1808. Printed by Order of the House of Representatives.
A collection of four pamphlets relating to international law and the violation of American neutrality during the Napoleonic Wars. The correspondence and reports relate specifically to the attack on the American frigate, the Chesapeake, off the coast of Virginia by a British ship of war, the Leopard, in June of 1807, and the impressment of members of its crew into the service of the British Navy. The US endeavored to protect its waters and nationals by passing the Embargo Act of 1807, thereby closing American ports and banning American ships from going to sea. Frequent interception of American ships to impress American citizens was a major cause of the War of 1812.
