Rutland, Vermont:: Shattuck Studio,, 2023.. One-of-a-Kind. 8 x 30"; 4 double sided crocheted panels. Text "Let Go or Be Dragged" in wool across crocheted panels. Crochet wool and Washi paper. Accordion structure. In black boards paper title label on front board. Back board with flap fold in containing information about crocheting and poem by Shiloh Morrison "Crochet". Carolyn Shattuck: "The word crochet comes from the French word HOOK. The term was used for tools in French lacemaking as well as Scottish shepherd's knitting, both of which are precursors to modern crochet. The modern crochet hook was perfected in the 1830's in England. Not until the 1940's, did crochet become popular in America because of the renewed interest in home crafts. In the 1970's granny squares were popularized, often with bright colours. "As far as I can remember, I have been working with wool. When I was a night nurse in Montreal, I decided to teach myself crocheting. It led to creating many afghans, pillows and even a bathing suit. Since I make books, I thought it would be exciting to combine both crocheting and book arts. The art of 'letting go' and crocheting creates a calm mind.

Fred Hagstrom: "'Pipeline' documents the ongoing protests against the construction of the Enbridge Line 3 oil pipeline that will take tar sands oil from Canada to Superior Wisconsin. It is actually a new line along a new route, leaving the old pipeline in the ground. The line crosses land that is held by tribes without honoring treaty rights. It is seen as a threat to the sources of water in northern Minnesota, including the Mississippi and numerous wetlands and streams in the Lake Superior watershed. Tribes are also concerned about the effects of possible spills on wild rice beds. The oil from this line will greatly add to emissions."

This fabulous poster was created especially for the featured author of Texas Writers Month in 2000 held in Austin, Texas by graphic designer Marc English. It is printed on heavy high quality coated stock in metalic inks: silver and bronze and laid over a duotone photograph of the rugged Big Bend country of West Texas. The poster quotes a long scene from McCarthy's BLOOD MERIDIAN with drops of bronze red blood for emphasis. This is a stunning visual and carries the impact of the original text depicting a scene of horror as the savages line up on horseback along the ridge their glass beads and painted bodies caught forever in the sun's hot glare as they anticipate the massacre that would follow. Only McCarthy could make this scene so vivid you might have to put the book down and never finish it.
