About This Item

Stanford University, 1947-1948.

SCARCE POSTWAR LECTURE SYLLABUS FOR PHYSICIANS' COURSE IN THE CARE OF POLIO PATIENTS AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY.

17.5x25.5 cm blue printed paper covers, stapled, typescript text, i-ix, 79 pp, browning of cover and text pages, unmarked and very good in archival mylar cover. PREFACE: This publication has been compiled from special courses for physicians in the treatment of poliomyelitis offered at Stanford University in 1947 and 1948. The reader should remember that this series was adapted from transcriptions of lectures given. The style is informal as the material was prepared for classroom presentation rather than organized in manuscript form. As it was impractical to reproduce those parts of the program based on demonstration of patients, this record is necessarily incomplete. However, basic material concerning the problem of poliomyelitis has been included. This should be of value to all medical personnel involved in the care of the poliomyelitis patient.

CONTRIBUTORS INCLUDE: VICTOR ERNEST HALL (1901–1981) was a Canadian scientist who researched physiology. His teaching and research career was spent at Stanford University and University of California, Los Angeles. He was executive editor of the Handbook of Physiology and long-time editor of the peer-reviewed journal the Annual Review of Physiology. HENRY D. BRAINERD (1943-2011) graduated from UCSF Medical School in 1968, served in the Army Medical Corps as a captain with the 101st Airborne Division, including duty in Vietnam, from 1969 to 1971, then entered private practice in Marin County where he remained until his retirement in 1998. MILAND E. KNAPP became the first chief of Physical Medicine at Minneapolis General Hospital and the first medical director of the Physical Therapy Department at the University of Minnesota. From 1944 to 1946 he was president of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and received its award for distinguished Service to the Disabled in 1956. He was prominent in the management of polio victims in Minneapolis during 1946 and 1952, and applied the rehabilitation techniques and therapies that worked for polio patients to patients with other impairments. During this time, the standard of care for patients was bed rest. Dr. Knapp proved that it was possible to decrease the time in which patients spent in the hospital as well as revolutionizing patient rehabilitation. He is largely responsible for the development of the medical specialty known as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
