About This Item

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner, & Co. Ltd,, 1895. First edition in English of the philosopher's examination of the conceptual foundations of religion, first published in Berlin in 1832 and deriving from notes taken by Hegel's students at the University of Berlin. In Lectures, Hegel (1770-1831) argues that the dogmatic creeds of organized Christianity serve to underpin rationally the instinctive nature of religious feeling. This approach, which elevates rational philosophy above traditional theological practice, would yield a more developed understanding of God. This edition was edited and partially translated by Ebenezer Brown Speirs (1854-1900), a minister from Perthshire, while much of the first two volumes was translated by a Miss J. Burdon Sanderson, who died during the publication process. Three volumes, octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, front and rear covers panelled in blind, brown coated endpapers. Light bumping and wear, slight cracking to hinges of vol. I, cosmetic splits to hinges of vol. III, minor foxing to endpapers and outer leaves, slight toning to contents: a very good copy.
