Goupil, Paris, 1880; Large woodburytype photograph by Etienne Carjat of prolific author and dramatist Adolphe Belot (1829-1890), who was envied by Zola and Flaubert for the high esteem in which his work was held by the general public. Photo measures 7 1/4" x 9", mounted on 11" x 14" card. Accompanied by four 11" x 14" pages of background and analytical text by Rene Delorme, in French. From the eminent French 19th century "Galerie Contemporaine" photographic collection of leading figures from the arts and sciences, published by Goupil and issued in parts from 1876 to 1884. Fine condition.

A rough copy with covers, endpapers and several preliminary blanks detached. Full sheep, probably early nineteenth century, with some gilt stamping, all edges tinted red, [4], 311 pages. Covers rubbed with much surface chipping from dryness (now stabilized), both covers detached but present, text block sound, pages very good with some minor age-toning, margin dampstains to final two leaves, otherwise clean and unmarked.. A very good copy in an attractive contemporary leather binding. Half black morocco. Spine with raised bands, each with gilt decoration. Compartments double ruled and lettered in gilt. Red title label, ruled and lettered in gilt. Morocco grained cloth on boards. Coated yellow endpapers. All edges gilt. A lovely copy.:

Tan morocco title label with gilt, lettering, ruling and leaves. Smaller label has "Oxford" within gilt ruling. Beige cloth on boards. Top edge gilt. Previous owners five line inscription from1919, written neatly in ink on front free endpaper. .A very good, bright copy.
