London, Longmans, Green, Reader and Dyer, 1867 New Edition. Hardback, Small 8vo. 7 x 5 inches. Dark green polished morocco leather fine binding by Riviere, with extensive decorative gilt paneling to boards, gilt lettering and raised banding and decorations to spines. Full gilt page edging. Marbled endpapers. In very good condition. Beautiful leather binding, some minor rubbing to corners and edges and ends of spine. Some minor rubbing to bottom edge of rear board, else beautiful covers. Neat glue repair to front endpaper. Bookseller label to front “Williams, Oxford St.” Binders stamp to verso corner. Dark foxing to blank prelims with neat inscription to front “Ada Christy, from her affectionate friends Anna S. & Lacey (?) Metcalfe, Highfield, July 1818.” Some minor foxing spots to title page. Some minor spots to inside pages else pages very clean and tight. Else a very clean and tight copy. 210pp +2pp cat. Illustrated with B&W line drawings by George Scharf. Four historical poems, each upon a different Heroic episode in the History of Rome. Each is preceded by an explanatory essay. Thomas Babington Macaulay [1800-1859] poet, historian & politician. These verse were written to pass the time whilst out of Political Office. Horatius, Battle of the Lake Regillus, Virginia, The Prophecy of Capys.
