About This Item

SADLER, Michael Thomas. The Law of Population: A Treatise, in Six Books; in Disproof of the Superfecundity of Human Beings, and Developing the Real Principle of Their Increase. London: John Murray, 1830. 1st ed. 2 Vols. xvi,639;xii,690pp. Orig. cloth-backed boards, printed paper spine labels. Labels sunned, minor wear to spine ends and corners, small amount of faint scattered foxing, else a near fine, untrimmed copy. Michael Thomas Sadler (1780-1835) wrote this work based on his experience as Poor Law administrator in Leeds. He devoted much effort in Parliament to urging the extension of the Poor Law to Ireland. He also proposed a Bill to regulate the minimum age and maximum working hours of children (no more than 10 hours for persons under 18) in the textile industry. Sadler scrutinized Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population and became convinced that the statistics it quoted in support were unsound (or where sound misused). This led him to oppose Malthusian theories of population and their use to reject state provision for the poor. A pioneering work in the root causes of poverty.
