Description:
Cantabrigiae [Cambridge] : John White, 1622 A fair to good copy of the scarce 1st edition with map, in contemporary full leather binding. The binding has wear to spine joints, the top and bottom of the spine and edges, but is of good quality leather and would repair well. Page edges red. Internally there is an armorial bookplate of the Kinnaird family to the front pastedown and a signature of James West, clearly an early owner, on the fep.James has made some notes about the elections to Parliament for the County of Leicester in 1775. The fep has a tear at the top. With decorative title page (small repair to side margin); dedication 2pp; To the Reader 6pp; double page map; text pp 1-332; Catalogue 6pp; finis; table added in ms 3pp. The shields have been carefully coloured in (including one on the title page)- possibly by or for an early owner as there has been occasional offsetting from the colouring over time. There is also some scholarly annotation and an additional coat of arms has been added in the…

c.1590, 1590. The modern synopsis of the document is . "The Rt Hon Francis Earle of Bedford Lord Lieut of Devon (note in corner that the petition must be with (?) the Lords of the Council, not the Lord Lieut.) Recites Totnes is an ancient Corporation and the Mayor and ex-Mayor are the justices of the Peace within the Borough. That the town stands on the River Dart 7 miles from Dartmouth and from thence a daily passage by water within 4 miles of Torbay a spacious bay able to receive 500 ships and about 14 hrs sail from the coast of Normandy and Brittany and well -known to the French and others by continual trade. Is required to have a magazine of 84 barrells of powder with lead and match at the town charge. The principal strength is 60 trained soldiers 40 musketeers and 20(?) cornets who are summoned to general musters sometimes 6 or 8 miles from the town and that year 20 miles leaving the town naked and indefensible. The petitioners (?) to be allowed to raise a trained band of 100 and have same privilege as Weymouth Plymouth Dartmouth and Barnstaple to choose our officers and muster only within our precincts." On watermarked paper neatly folded and bound into half calf lettered in gilt along the spine with marbled boards. Delivered contemporaneously with the Armada (1588), this petition from the good officers of Totnes reflects the continued threat from across the channel, and the need for towns along the channel coast to arm themselves sufficently. Almost certainly a contemporary copy, it would seem unlikely the original is still extant, not found in the Devon Record Office Online Catalogue. Hardcover. Fine.. 4to (unfolded 390 x 300mm). Manuscript.

Description:
London : J Streater, for Henry Twiford, George Sawbridge, Thomas Dring, and John Place, 1657 A very good copy of Londinopolis in full leather binding. James Howell, (c1594-1666) navigated his way with some difficulty through the changing allegiances of the English Civil War, Commonwealth and Restoration, spending 8 years in prison between 1643 and 1650. He attempted various court positions, becoming Royal Historiographer to Charles II in 1660, but made most of his living from writing. Londinopolis describes the main landmarks and areas of London with outlines of their history. Lowell is frank that he has 'fetched' most of his materials from others and it is considered that much of the content comes from Stow. This copy of Londinopolis is in a later 1800's full leather binding by H Woodburn. This has a delicate blind tooled border of leaves to the boards; raised bands, blind tooled designs and title label to spine. It is showing some wear to the front hinge and edges and has a small scuff but is…

Description:
London & New York: Hodder and Stoughton & George H. Doran Company, 1908. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the U.S. first edition, more humble in appearance than its British counterpart, but also far more scarce. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs ostensibly taken by the author. The first U.S. edition is far scarcer than the British first edition, with only 1400 copies sold (encompassing all three states), in contrast to more than 8000 copies of the more frequently seen British edition. The U.S. first edition was made from British first edition sheets bound in a plain coarse dark red cloth with the same gilt titles on the spine as used on the British. Unlike its British counterpart, the sheets were left untrimmed on the fore and bottom edges and were…

Fox, in Westminster-Hall, 1689.Octavo, 7.1 x 4.4 in. First edition. A4, B-Z8, Aa-Zz8. The contents are cleaned and in good condition throughout, and the book is now bound in full handsome speckled calfskin in the style of the seventeenth century English binding.
Charles Cotton:
English poet and country squire, chiefly remembered for his share in Izaak Walton's The Compleate Angler.
Cotton made a number of translations from the French, including, in 1685, the often-reprinted Essays of Michael Seigneur de Montaigne, Corneille's Horace (1671), and several historical and philosophical works. Following the French fashion, he wrote Scarronides (1664, 1665), which is a coarse burlesque… Read More

Description:
LONDON: Tho Roycroft for Richard Blome, 1673 A fair copy of the 1st edition sadly lacking all but 2 of the maps. This work is rare. Richard Blome was heavily criticised at the time for producing the work - being accused of plagiarising Camden and Speed. He funded the work through subscribers but clearly sold few copies and ownership of it passed to John Wright in 1677. His work is now being reassessed and he is recognised for being the first to properly plan an illustrated description of London. This copy is in contemporary full leather binding which has been rebacked reasonably recently to provide a new spine with raised bands and gilt outlined title label. The boards have wear as you would expect - particularly to the corners - but are sound. With title page in red and black inks, dedication to Charles II, Preface to the Reader, alphabetical table of subscribers ('benefactors'), 12 leaves of coats of arms of the benefactors, portrait of Charles II pasted at the beginning of a general…

The Orygynale Cronykil of Scotland is a history of Scotland from the beginning of the world until the accession of King James I. The first five books focus on the creation of the world in general, and Scottish history commences in the sixth. The eighth book is longer than the first four combined. Bound in peroid calf with gilt decroation. The books hinges are starting and the corners are bumped. Description:
Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1686 A good copy in full leather binding with map, 26 folding and 11 single page plates. With the Copy of the Proposals and list of subscribers, but lacking the Arms Omitted. The binding, with blind stamped lining to boards, raised bands and title label to spine, is in very good clean condition. The spine has been relaid, but the boards do not look contemporary so this could be a later binding which has itself been repaired. There is a little scuffing to the boards but little significant wear. New endpapers have been added, replacing damaged and heavily marbled ones (? late victorian). The contents have been trimmed at some time (it is now on the quarto/folio border), but all page edges are red and the trimming does not look recent. The trimming is particularly obvious in the subscribers list. Overall the contents are in good condition, with most text pages and many plates being bright and clean. However significant paper repair was carried out at one time using tape…

Description:
This is complicated so bear with me. This is a sammelband (collection) of four titles from the publisher Muir. Listed in order of binding: First title "Life of Thomas Paine" (1833) is not attributed but appears to be abridged Sherwin's biography of Paine (See OCLC: 933006301). Second title "Rights of Man" (1833) requires no explanation. Next two titles written by Peter MacKenzie are rare and make up most of the value. Third title "Exposure of the Spy System" is the 1832 first edition of this work. Includes frontis of Hardie's grave. The fourth (final) title "Trial of James Wilson" is the 1832 first edition. The whole thing paginates: 48, viii, 104, [2], 242, 48. Bound in high quality quarter leather with marbled boards fine binding by Starr Bookworks. Defects are: page 21/22 of "Rights" has a repaired hole affecting a few words (see scan); list of Paine's works has some check marks; title page of "Spy" has small edge tear not affecting anything. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you…

WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
