The patient was old Aunt Bess Railton, matriarch of a large and unruly clan, whose members stood around outside while the doctor went to work. Dr. Crosthwait remembers one of these, fingering a lariat and remarking without a smile: "If anything happens to Aunt Bess, Doc done took his last stitch."
