About This Item
15, Frederick Street, Edinburgh and London: T.N. Foulis, Publisher, c. 1908 Hard cover chapbook, 12mo, measuring 3 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches), in brown jute buckram, blocked brown titles to front and spine, with a color lithographed scene applied of two lovers romantically enjoying a moonlight gondola ride upon the Grand Canal of Venice, with St. Mark's Basilica in the background. The remaining illustrations are tipped onto gray card. Frontispiece and hand-lettered title page are on subsequent, rather than facing pages (as was usual.) Printed by Neil and Company, Edinburgh upon heavy, laid paper. While undated, the sole T.N. Foulis Company address at Frederick Street, Edinburgh indicates this was an early imprint, since later issues of the same series also list the newly expanded premises in London as early as 1909, so this is prior to that date. The book cloth of brown Jute buckram was specially produced for the publisher in Dundee. This series was conceived for the gift market and was carefully detailed and produced. 44 unnumbered pages, plus 1 page advertisements.CONDITION: Very Good Minus. Bend to bottom front board, slight wear to bottom front joint. Front pastedown has a contemporary illustrated bookplate; below is a patch to the front pastedown repairing an old tear. Otherwise, there is very light foxing to prelims. The interior is otherwise clean and firm. It is a very pleasing item. Ref. Colin White, " A Printed Guide to the Works of Jessie M. King" (2007),(see p. 53 for T.N. Foulis dating reference.). Hard Cover. Very Good Minus. Illus. by Lewis Balmer and Others.
