About This Item

New York: The Blue Heron Press, 1953. Later edition (first published in 1941). xii, 307 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Beige cloth. Fine copy in very good jacket with very slight chipping at along top edge. Later edition (first published in 1941). xii, 307 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed and with a Bette Fast Drawing. Inscribed on the front pastedown, by Fast:

"To Leonard Lyons, with esteem and affection - a true and tested friend over / a quarter of a century. / From Bette and myself. / Howard Fast / 11/8/65."

On the flyleaf there is a pen-and-ink sketch of Little Wolf, signed by Fast's wife, Bette.

Leonard Lyons was for years one of New York's most prominent journalists. His column in the New York Post, "The Lyons' Den" was widely read and immensely popular since its commencement in 1934. Unlike many of his colleagues, however, Lyons was highly respected for his fairness and highmindedness. According to Ralph Blumenthal in STORK CLUB (Boston, 2000), "Lyons didn't believe in writing about romances and divorces. Nor, it was said, did he ever violate a confidence ... He corresponded with world leaders and literary giants ... " (p. 131); and he counted among his friends celebrities as diverse as Ernest Hemingway (at whose funeral Lyons was pallbearer), Marilyn Monroe, and Orson Welles. A very nice association copy.
