The Bodley Head, 1956. First Edition. Hardcover. Lewis, C.S. (Clive Staples) : The Last Battle. London : The Bodley Head, 1956. First impression. Size is octavo (8vo), 7.75"/20cm. Bound in publisher's blue cloth over boards, bright silver lettering imprinted on spine. DJ in light green w/black and white lettering (front) or white with black lettering (back); front also features a Pauline Baynes illustration in blue and brown of Lucy conferring with faun Tumnus. Blank endpapers/flyleaves; 184 numbered pp. Many Baynes illustrations in b&w (none in color)scattered through text.Condition notes: A highly collectible copy of this Narnia classic, seventh and last in the series (in Lewis' original, published, order). This is the rare 1956 British First edition/First Impression by The Bodley Head. Included is the original dustjacket -- not a reproduction, not price-clipped. Binding is slightly cocked off square, solid. DJ shows tanning and foxing from age both interior and exterior(see photos), a few chips and small tears, noticeably at corners and spine ends. The DJ also contains the only writing observed anywhere in this copy, discreetly in two places: in the upper right corner of the front inside flap of the DJ, where '1.70' has been written 1/8"/3mm tall, quite unobtrusive; second, a neat numeral '7' has been written in blue pen (1/4"/6mm tall) on the dj spine above author's name. Both endpapers show slight tanning and foxing. Textblock edges are lightly tanned and with a trace of foxing. P. 95/96 has a slight imperfection top of page at binding, wrinkling. The boards are nice, unfaded, corners bumped. Spine top and tail slightly rolled. We seal, wrap, box, and insure your package to protect your investment. And we personally inspect every book we offer.

Description:
325 pages with illustrations by Herbert F. Roese. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering and front board decoratively blind stamped in original pictorial jacket. First edition. The beloved characters--mortal and immortal--of Topper return in this uproarious romp through the south of France. One of Thorne Smith's best-loved comedies, it proves once again that he is the undisputed master of urbane wit and sophisticated repartee. Cosmo Topper, the mild-mannered bank manager who was persuaded to take a walk on the wild side by the ghosts of George and Marion Kerby in Topper, finds himself reunited with his dyspeptic wife for an extended vacation on the Riviera. But he doesn't have long to enjoy the peace and quiet before the irrepressible Kerbys materialize once again and start causing fracases, confusing the citizenry, alarming the gendarmes, getting naked, and turning every occasion into revelry or melee. Soon Marion decides that Topper as a ghost…

Description:
Complete bound Volume 1 (Numbers 1-12) of Popular Flying, preserving the original covers. Edited by W.E Johns, with significant contributions including illustrations and writing by him. Includes the first appearance of Biggles in the story "The White Fokker" (as well as a further short story as 'William Earle'). A total of 10 of these 12 issues contain Biggles stories, the early stories under the pen-name "William Earle". Very Good condition internally (protected by the binding), with bumping to lower corners of pages, and early cracking to front hinge. Externally, there is significant scraping to the boards and chipping/discolouration to the spine label. It is most uncommon for bound volumes to preserve the glorious original covers of these magazines.William Earl Johns (5 February 1893 – 21 June 1968) was an English pilot and writer of adventure stories, usually written under the pen name Captain W. E. Johns. He is best remembered as the creator of the ace pilot and adventurer Biggles.

Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
