About This Item

In Italian.

Spine somewhat faded, pages slightly cocked, one front corner bumped. Some foxing. very slight fraying at head of spine. Illustrations in text and 46 full page sepia plates on heavy clay stock. In original plain cardboard slipcase, which has foxing and a torn corner. Bears signature of former owner, the distinguished medievalist K.M. Setton (1914 - 1995) of the Princeton Institute of Advanced Study.

Professor Hermanin (1868 - 1953) was a distinguished art critic and historian, Superintendent of the Galleries and Museums of Lazio and Abruzzi, Director of the National Gallery of Ancient Art, director of restoration work on the Palazzo di Venezia, and lectured on art at the University of Rome.

In this work (Vol. l of Monografie Artistiche dei Musei e Gallerie Pontifiche) he set out in well-written and highly knowledgeable text to provide a description, as he puts it, "sgombra di erudizione" which will prepare the reader to visit the magnificent rooms which were the residence if Alexander Vl, and to see and admire the "stupende creazione" of Bernardino Pinturicchio and his colleagues in one of the greatest artistic treasures of the Renaissance which have come down to us.
