About This Item

Good. 1882. Hardcover. Printed at San Francisco, Francis, Valentine & Co., printers, 1882. Compiled by The Directory Publishing Co. Pictorial paper boards with quarter leather binding; advertisements are printed on all edges of text block. Heavy chipping along spine and front gutter is cracked; boards have heavy wear and toning; text block has moderate toning and light soiling. Overall good. This large directory for San Francisco includes a 21" x 27" color map and many local advertisements. This map is titled "Guide Map of the City of San Francisco compiled from the Official Surveys & Engraved Expressly for Langley's San Francisco Directory 1882." The map has 2" and 6" fold tears and two 1" closed tears, all of which have been repaired with archival tape. The first 52 pages and the last 4 pages in the directory are local advertisements printed in b&w with many illustrations. There are also plates throughout the text block, a handful in color or printed on color paper, with more advertisements. The first section of the directory covers municipal government officers and buildings; the second section covers public streets, avenues, squares and places in San Francisco. Pages 140-1003 contain the resident and business directory, and pages 1004-1010 contain a directory of Chinese business firms of San Francisco. A great example of a 19th century directory. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1171 pp .
