A book of historical fiction by the great-grand-daughter of book's subject, Darwin Langley. After losing his home and family, fourteen-year-old Darwin Langley leaves Michigan in 1881 to make his fortune in Kansas. He's sure he needs no help, not even from the God his parents believed in. He works in a northern lumber camp until pride causes him to make a dangerous mistake. In Chicago, he thinks he's ready to tackle the world, but hadn't considered traitorous companions. A bout with typhoid sends him down the Illinois and Michigan Canal with an unusual missionary. Striking out alone along the flooding Mississippi River, he's stuck in quicksand, and stranded on a sandbar with a very pregnant lady. Still believing in his own abilities, Darwin encounters thieves and a bone collector in the peaceful hills of Missouri. A dying Indian befriends him in Kansas, convincing him to consider the possibility of a higher power, but when he is wrongfully imprisoned, Darwin doubts again. A story of courage and faith.
