Bound at the end are two journal extracts by the author, I. From: Journal de Pharmacie et de Chimie, August 1858, and II. From: Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Vol. 53, August 2, 1858. Foxed, first and last pages waterstained at outer margins. Ownership stamp (Grandeau) on half title. Contemporary half calf with 4 raised bands, spine gilt. Author's dedication copy to Louis Grandeau, French chemist and professor at Nancy University; inscribed and signed by the author on first flyleaf. Both Oersted and Wöhler had attempted to develop a new light metal - possibly aluminum. Henri Étienne Sainte-Claire Deville, a French chemist, also undertook the task and after many experiments actually produced aluminum by laboratory methods (Sparrow). - PREMIERE EDITION. Très rare. Grande planche dépl. h.t. gravée sur métal et quelques figures sur bois dans le texte. Ouvrage fondamental, considéré comme l'un des textes les plus importants du XIXe siècle. En effet, Henri de Sainte-Claire Deville (1818-1881) prépara pour la première fois de l'aluminium pur en 1854; il en analysa les propriétés physiques et chimiques, et pressentit immédiatement l'utilisation que pourrait en faire l'industrie française. Napoléon III lui donna les moyens d'y arriver. En 1855, Jean-Baptiste Dumas présenta à l'Académie des sciences le premier lingot d'aluminium produit par Saint-Claire Deville. Dans son ouvrage, l'auteur traité des propriétés physiques et chimiques de ce nouveau métal mais aussi de sa préparation et de ses applications industrielles.
