About This Item
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1817. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 11.5" by 9". None. The first edition of this famous narrative poem by the Irish poet, Thomas Moore. In a smart half calf binding. This is the first edition of the poem, being issued in quarto form. This is the variant without the plates. With the printed dedication to Samuel Rogers following the title page. Lalla Rookh is formed of four narrative poems with a connecting tale in prose concerning the heroine whose name is the title, Lalla Rookh. Lallah Rookh is the daughter of the 17th century Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Thomas Moore was an Irish poet, singer, songwriter and entertainer. He was often referred to as Anacreon Moore in his lifetime. He is often considered as Ireland's national bard and is commemorated in several places. This poem has since been inspiration for many musical settings such as Frederic Clay & W G Wills' 'Cantata' and the opera Lalla-Roukh by Felecien David. In a half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, generally smart with light rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Patches of light rubbing to the boards abd ti the head and tail of spine. Prior owner's label to the title page, William Burnett. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Creasing to the centre of pages 233-264, not affecting text. A few marks to the margins of pages 352-353. Otherwise, just the odd spots to pages. Very Good
